About Phobias

Phobias are usually first noticed and diagnosed when people find that they are having problems in their everyday lives because of their heightened fears. For example their relationships at home or at work may be suffering, or students finding it is encroaching on their school life and so they decide to seek professional help.

However, many people do not go and have their phobias properly diagnosed as they adapt their lives so that they can side step the issue, for example someone who is afraid of enclosed spaces will often cope by trying to ignore the situation and make excuses to themselves and others as to why they always take the stairs "the excersise does me good" is a classic example. The human body and mind have some fabulous defence mechanisms to avoid potentially troublesome situations altogether.

How are phobias treated?

Phobia treatments usually have a behavioural focus. Secure in a safe therapy environment, people with phobias are gradually introduced into the situation that normally causes them anxiety, then taken back out again. They learn control over their anxiety whilst at the same time gain greater exposure to their individual phobic situation. It is a repetitive process which builds confidence and relieves the anxiety. I also use an EFT treatment (emotional freedom therapy) to ease any long standing emotional baggage over their phobia, this works particularly well when the person is angry at themselves for example: "being afraid of such a silly little thing."  and also hypnosis treatments.

There are several ways to treat phobias ranging from quite dramatic to the softer approaches. I personally do not like forceful techniques such as flooding (where person is expeosed to the maximum of their fear within a controlled environment in order to make all future encounters psychologically a much "smaller deal" as an example, someone afraid of heights would be taken to the top of a very high building then blindfold taken off so the response would be immediate. This works on the principle that all phobias are irrational fears to exposure to the max makes all other encounters bearable.

I am not a fan of this technique as I feel it exposes client to too high a level of stress and emotional discomfort. bearing in mind that there are the other equally as effective but much gentler treatments.

What are the symptoms of a phobia?

The manifestations of Phobias are extremely varied. Even in people with a phobia of the same type of phobia they may have totally different symptoms. For example two patients with fear of spiders, one may have a mild phobia, just not like touching them or picking them up, but the other patient may feel violently sick at the sight of them, unable to say even the word spider, break out in cold sweats, become irrational etc... so phobias must be taken case by case on an individual basis. A mild phobia may be alleviated in a matter of one single session whereas a long standing extreme phobia may take much longer, it all depends upon the individual circumstances.

Common phobia symptoms are revulsion, fear, feeling sick, raised heart rate, increased breathing, sweating, dizziness and many more...
